This painting is located on the Bergen County Court House wall in Court room number 253, second floor Rotunda. It depicts the Mansion House and the Ross & Ross building as they existed at the time of the RevolutioRoss & Ross Esq. Attorneys at Lawnary War. The Mansion House was one of George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War. It is believed that the Ross & Ross building were contiguous to the Mansion House and part of Washington’s headquarters.  The Mansion House suffered a fire in the last century and was subsequently torn down. The Ross & Ross building was damaged by that fire but not destroyed.  Today it is likely the oldest structure on Main Street.

The Green

The Green was a gift from a resident in 1696. It was the village center of the town which was then known as New Barbados, today Hackensack. In 1709 Hackensack became the County Seat of Bergen County. The bronze statute located in the center of the Green was erected in 1924 and depicts an unidentified Minute Man.

Ross & Ross Building

The building, while it has been renovated numerous times since its construction, was originally constructed in the early 1700’s. It is believed to be the back part of the old Mansion House, which was one of Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War. It is located at 52 Main Street and is at the North West corner of The Green. It is the second building on the right hand side of Main Street from the Bergen County Court House.
